Envisions for the Future...

Over our spring break, I took time looking over the questions we as a present group were wanting to ask. Refining any if needed, also thinking about WHO we wanted to make sure we scheduled interviews with; like a need to go too. As a group we have compiled a nice list, and the next steps were finding help on using the audio equipment. Yes, I have some familiarity with the equipment from last semester, but it's a lot to undertake. So I reached out to the audio expert Adam D, to see if we could schedule time to meet with him and have a learning session. Luckily he will be attending the class this week, so bonus for us in the present group.
The next steps I see for our project, is going out in Hollins Market and scheduling the interviews we as group think will be beneficial to the project. I'm excited for the next steps, because it's going out and doing my favorite part for any project like this; which is talk to individuals in the community.  To learn detailed history for a certain areas, by word of mouth is more engaging then reading literature (I feel at least). We are planning on pitching our idea to past Baltimore Traces students/ alumni, to get their input into what we have planned.  We did a process similar like this with our "Learning from Lexington" project, which was extremely helpful, because we were able to figure out what may or may not work well. After this weeks class, we will plan the future endeavors we have to finishing out project. The rich history we are uncovering and plan on sharing with the community of Hollins Market, is truly fascinating.

Planning, Planning, Planning.....

In the past week, we have outlined as a group with our grad student leader Lia; how we as the present group are going to tackle our section of the project. Lia set up for us to pick a certain part of our project to take lead on, so we all are contributing equally. The only difficult part of the assignment Lia gave, is to come up with questions that we would ask. The reason this is so difficult, because you want to make sure the questions being asked are the right ones, so it will have an easy flow to the interview. Also, specific questions can lead  the interviewee to divulging more information in the interview. So the next steps going forward is to plan the days and time we will go out and begin our interviews; I'm excited for whats to come....

History of Hollins Market

In 1910-1915 There was a increase in classified and display ads about the Hollins Market. Most were promoting the business itself and what the Market offered. From 1915- 1920, was the brunt of the articles mentioning Hollins Market and how it was a common area for the locals to meet to discuss primarily crime issues in the area. There was mention of a local school sports team, on numerous accounts, but mainly the discussion was revolved around the crime in the area. Only a few talk about updating the market. Thoughts on the class project would be to create a podcast and even a zine on how Hollins Market is considered a local community space for people that live in the area. Discuss or shed light on the rich history this market has to the surrounding residents. Yes, there is always talks of remodeling, or changing the public Markets to help suit a different demographic of people in the area; but why change something with such a rich history? Seeing what has been done to help mark the ...

What's the word on the street????

This past week, the present group worked on collecting more interviews and as a class we were to read the transcriptions to see what is the common theme in them. The theme or "word on the street" is how certain areas, like the Arabbers stables and other local businesses add to the areas rich history. Many locals want to preserve the area and not change it, but with War Horse wanting to build in the area it will definitely change the dynamic of the neighborhood. There is a 'rough' sketch of what Hollins Market is predicted to look like, if construction could happen, but it is a plan the community members haven't really discussed or know if it's ever going to happen. I have an interview before class today with JR, he lives in the community and he also was the previous owner of Mi Ranchito's , which use to be the location where the Cultured Pearl once stood. So I'm definitely excited to see what he has to say about living and running a business in Hollins...
