Project ideas????

Hollins Market is seen as a staple of history, especially the surrounding area of the Market. Ways in which we could contribute to the Market is creating a zine, displaying the history of Market and surrounding businesses. This is a way in which we can contribute to local events in the  neighborhood, and give local residents a history of the area around the Market. Contributions of our class project can be seen in, interviews, research, or photography. So we can have pictures or quotes from residents and local business owners. For an event to be meaningful, we need to analyze how we can contribute to Hollins Market. Does something need to change? Do we need to shed light on a specific issue? Creating a zine will help promote Hollins Market and local businesses of the area; for the outside neighborhoods/businesses.
The zine can be given or displayed at the SOWEBO festival, where we as a class can contribute our findings. My interests of contributions for the project is primarily interviews, as well as research.

Planning, Planning, Planning.....

In the past week, we have outlined as a group with our grad student leader Lia; how we as the present group are going to tackle our section of the project. Lia set up for us to pick a certain part of our project to take lead on, so we all are contributing equally. The only difficult part of the assignment Lia gave, is to come up with questions that we would ask. The reason this is so difficult, because you want to make sure the questions being asked are the right ones, so it will have an easy flow to the interview. Also, specific questions can lead  the interviewee to divulging more information in the interview. So the next steps going forward is to plan the days and time we will go out and begin our interviews; I'm excited for whats to come....

Focus for our project....

The main focus or storyline for our project is to showcase the history of Hollins Market. As mentioned before, there isn't any ground breaking contribution we could do, but more so show case the rich history that stems from Hollins Market. Giving insight to the local businesses that have been built in or near the Market and have lasted as long as they have; is something worth celebrating. Creating a platform of advertisement for the businesses, so locals around Baltimore would come and visit. This could increase revenue for Hollins Market, that may not be present at the Market currently. The name of the project needs to be witty or clever to help draw in interest from outsiders. One idea may be: Walking History of Hollins Market.(yes, I know this screams witty!!)  This project is to help explore the rich history of the Hollins Market and why the area should be consider a staple of Baltimore. During our recent visit of Hollins Market, I was unaware of the history the Market itself h...

What's the word on the street????

This past week, the present group worked on collecting more interviews and as a class we were to read the transcriptions to see what is the common theme in them. The theme or "word on the street" is how certain areas, like the Arabbers stables and other local businesses add to the areas rich history. Many locals want to preserve the area and not change it, but with War Horse wanting to build in the area it will definitely change the dynamic of the neighborhood. There is a 'rough' sketch of what Hollins Market is predicted to look like, if construction could happen, but it is a plan the community members haven't really discussed or know if it's ever going to happen. I have an interview before class today with JR, he lives in the community and he also was the previous owner of Mi Ranchito's , which use to be the location where the Cultured Pearl once stood. So I'm definitely excited to see what he has to say about living and running a business in Hollins...
