History of Hollins Market

In 1910-1915 There was a increase in classified and display ads about the Hollins Market. Most were promoting the business itself and what the Market offered. From 1915- 1920, was the brunt of the articles mentioning Hollins Market and how it was a common area for the locals to meet to discuss primarily crime issues in the area. There was mention of a local school sports team, on numerous accounts, but mainly the discussion was revolved around the crime in the area. Only a few talk about updating the market.

Thoughts on the class project would be to create a podcast and even a zine on how Hollins Market is considered a local community space for people that live in the area. Discuss or shed light on the rich history this market has to the surrounding residents. Yes, there is always talks of remodeling, or changing the public Markets to help suit a different demographic of people in the area; but why change something with such a rich history? Seeing what has been done to help mark the area a national landmark and preserve the history that is still present in the area.

Planning, Planning, Planning....

The past couple of weeks have been busy ones to say the least; we've recently had past alumni and other special guests in to discuss the outcome of our project. We did something very similar like this last semester, from the "Learning from Lexington", which helped us get an outsiders point of view on how to tweak our project where it will be the most beneficial. The "past" portion of our group has created a digitalized "walking tour" as well as pictures of the current places to use on the website. The present portion of our group have been working on gaining interviews to help contribute to the overall project. My contributions has been targeted setup of the interviews and usage of the equipment, by enlisting a current student who is a pro at the audio equipment. In the coming weeks we will be finishing up interviews and transcribing them for the final project. I'm extremely excited to see how well this project is coming along....

Planning, Planning, Planning.....

In the past week, we have outlined as a group with our grad student leader Lia; how we as the present group are going to tackle our section of the project. Lia set up for us to pick a certain part of our project to take lead on, so we all are contributing equally. The only difficult part of the assignment Lia gave, is to come up with questions that we would ask. The reason this is so difficult, because you want to make sure the questions being asked are the right ones, so it will have an easy flow to the interview. Also, specific questions can lead  the interviewee to divulging more information in the interview. So the next steps going forward is to plan the days and time we will go out and begin our interviews; I'm excited for whats to come....

Thoughts on the class

This semester, taking classes in the downtown classroom has really been a special experience. This being the second semester working at one of Baltimore's public markets has been a great learning experience for myself. The difference with Hollins market is the sense of community there and even though at the moment there may not be as many people around. The community members that are there, are fighting to make it the best market they can. Being able to work with people in the community that are there has been a real highlight, and to see the history of the area has been truly remarkable. To know that there is an actual horse stable in Baltimore was crazy and the local businesses that have lasted in the area, due to their presence in the community is really remarkable. My ideas of what markets were, have truly changed from this class, and the meaning that they hold for the local community members, and how they need to be preserved not changed; is something that is worth fighting fo...
